In 1899 Cal made a wild run through the streets of San Francisco clutching the Stanford Axe. With Stanford and the police on their heels they raced across the Bay to rally through the night before they hid the Axe in a sacred resting place, only to be confronted again by the Stanford men. This time, with disguises on their face...The scrimmage goes on until Cal is able to foil further assault and hide the Axe within a vault. And there the legend rests. The Legendary Axe Caper of 1899 Scarf depicting the famous theft is captured in poem and illustration on silk commissioned by the California Alumni Association and can be purchased at U Threads.

To add insult to injury, in 1982, with eight seconds left in the Big Game, Cal engineered five lateral plays, squashed the Stanford Band’s trombone player and made a touchdown to win the Big Game. Through Joe Starkey’s historic radio transcript the thrilling moments of “The Play” is relived in word and illustrated images on a tie commissioned by the California Alumni Association. |
